Dear linguists, We write to let you know about an upcoming talk hosted by BULA: *The Linguistics of Existence* *Peter Klapes, M.A. candidate in Philosophy (Boston College)* *Monday, April 8 at 5:45pm, CAS 225* https://www.facebook.com/events/2203739999714132/ *Abstract: *It is said that the nature of the linguistic sign is arbitrary. Since antiquity, the question of whether words are linked to their referent by nature or merely by convention has persisted. In Plato’s *Cratylus*, Socrates realizes that names are often imperfect in the naming of any object. Later, sparking somewhat of a linguistic crisis, Friedrich Nietzsche questioned the nature of truth and Ferdinand de Saussure demonstrated that *signifiers* and *signifieds* share no inherent link. This concept of linguistic arbitrariness will, in this talk, be connected to philosophical, existential, and anthropological questions and themes—including freedom, poetics, politics, and the nature of the imagination. *Speaker bio: *Peter Klapes is a student in the department of philosophy at Boston College, specializing in contemporary continental philosophy, psychoanalytic theory, the intersection of philosophy and literature, and, generally, philosophical anthropology. Peter’s work has appeared in various philosophical journals, and he currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of *Dianoia*, BC’s international journal of philosophy. Later this year, Peter’s work on interpersonal subjectivity will appear in a book published by Fordham University Press. Peter also works on a bibliographic project in Modern Greek literature, serves on the advisory board of the Guestbook Project, an international forum for narrative hospitality, and is currently at work on a thesis on the hermeneutics of desire. You may be interested to hear the following news from the speaker that day, Prof. Derry Wijaya: "Hi everyone, I want to let you know about the talk on "Building and Evaluating Conversational Agents" that we are having on Monday 11-12 at Hariri during our usual AI Research Meeting: https://www.bu.edu/hic/2018/11/28/air-joao-sedoc/. I thought the talk can be interesting and relevant for some, given the pervasiveness of conversational agents nowadays: Siri, Alexa, Google Home, etc; and also the yearly Amazon Alexa Challenge. The talk is by Joao Sedoc <https://sites.google.com/site/jsedoc/> a PhD student at University of Pennsylvania whom I met while I was doing a Postdoc there. He has been working on this area of building conversational agents for his PhD thesis, and he taught a seminar class at Penn on building these conversational agents, using Alexa as a testbed for deploying the agents (very cool). Volunteer at BU Conference on Language Development

Hi everyone, Every fall, BU plays host to one of the biggest and most prestigious conferences on language acquisition in the world, the Boston University Conference on Language Development. The conference is student-run, and volunteers are needed for this year's iteration, which takes place November 2-4. Anyone who volunteers for at least four hours of work can attend the conference itself for free! Please contact Emmy DiGirolamo directly at emdg(a)bu.edu if you are interested, letting her know your availability and which of the tasks below you'd like to be considered for. --- Here are the descriptions of the different volunteer opportunities: Handbook copyediting Several volunteers will be needed about two weeks or so before the conference to check the final draft of the conference handbook for errors before it is sent to print. Folder assembling work party Shortly before the conference, volunteers gather to assemble the folder of materials – nametags, handbook, etc. – that will be given to each person attending the conference. This usually takes less than 2 hours and is a decidedly social event. A date for the work party will be set in October. Registration desk We need students to staff the welcome and registration area at the conference, and to greet and register delegates as they arrive and help provide general orientation to the conference site. This requires a short training session. Session Chairs Session chairs work during the conference. In a team of 2-3 volunteers, Session chairs are responsible for the following tasks: 1) Introduce speakers 2) Monitor the timing of each talk 3) Oversee that the talk runs smoothly, and contact one of the conference organizers if help is needed. Book Exhibit The Book Exhibit volunteers will supervise a table of books sent by a Publisher. The volunteers will make sure the table is kept organized, and answer questions that conference attendees might have about the books. This information about the books will be provided to you upon arrival at the conference. ---
