The location for the (Thursday) October 8 general BULA meeting has been set. It will be in CAS 233 at 6pm. I will probably send another reminder about it a couple of days before the event. Thursday, October 8, 6pm CAS 233 Also, the Yearbook will probably be there to take a couple of pictures of BULA in action. That's it... -Paul

No Tolkien talk this year

Hi everyone. Monica wanted to pass on this message about the Tolkien talk at MIT that was discussed at the BULA meeting. Apparently, it was actually LAST year, but was erroneously listed on the Linguistics program web site as being this year. Apologies for the error in the listing, it wasn't obvious from the MITLings page what year this was happening. I regret to inform you that the information on the Linguistics department page was flawed and the Tolkien talk was, in fact, last year. It looked pretty interesting and resulted in a course at Harvard. Anyway, what this means for the group is, we will not be having a field trip. Hello BULA. As promised at the meeting, here are the details about volunteering at the BUCLD. Participation is encouraged, it's a neat opportunity! -Paul Dear BULA member: Every year, students in the Boston University Program in Applied Linguistics plan, organize, and bring into being the BU Conference on Language Development. This year?s conference takes place November 6-8, 2009 and relies on student volunteers for support. We are in the process of recruiting volunteers, and hope you will consider helping us out! If you can give us four hours of your time, you?ll get free admission to the entire conference, which is a great way to find out about research currently going on in language development. A short description of each of the available volunteer tasks is provided below. Sierra Laidman BUCLD 2009 Volunteer Coordinator ** Handbook copyediting Several volunteers will be needed approximately one month or so before the conference to check the final draft of the conference handbook for errors before it is sent to print. Folder assembling work party Shortly before the conference, volunteers gather to assemble the folder of materials ? nametag, handbook, etc. ? that will be given to each person attending the conference. This usually takes less than 2 hours and is a decidedly social event. A date for the work party will be set in October. Registration desk We need students to staff the welcome and registration area at the conference. Greet and register delegates as they arrive and help provide general orientation to the conference site. Requires a short training session. Chairing It is the chairs' task to introduce speakers and oversee sessions at the conference. Introduce yourself to speakers at the beginning of each session, check that audiovisual materials are in working order, then start each talk by introducing the speaker to the audience. Requires a short training session. Co-Chairing Working closely with the session chair, the co-chair monitors the timing of each talk, making sure that presentations start on time and advising the speaker as her allotted time is coming to a close. Requires a short training session. Book exhibits Publishers of texts and journals in language and linguistics will have their books on display during the conference. We'll need help bringing these books to the display site, setting up the display tables, and repacking books at the end of the weekend. Several volunteers are needed to relieve publishers staffing the tables throughout the conference as well as to staff tables which are not staffed by publisher representatives.

Undergraduate Linguistics conferences

Following up on the previous message, here is one posting in the "undergraduate Linguistics opportunities" category.. There are a few academic conferences during the year that are run specifically for undergraduate Linguistics audiences, with research presentations by undergraduates. One such conference was recently announced at the University of Ottawa, although the deadline for abstract submissions has just passed. If you find yourself in Ottawa, however, on Nov 21, it might be interesting to attend. Some information on this conference can be found here in their call for participation http://tinyurl.com/oclu2009 Even though the submission deadline for this conference has passed, McGill University and Harvard University each regularly host such conferences in the spring, so if you might be interested in doing this, keep your eye out for the announcement (which should be posted to this mailing list when the conferences are announced). BULA upcoming events

Greetings, Linguistics enthusiasts. I hope your Fall semesters are proceeding nicely. A couple of announcements. The first being: FIRST BULA GENERAL GROUP MEETING Tuesday, September 22 6pm GSU back court This will be an informal gathering to meet other members, eat, and talk about ideas for coming activities. Just come to the GSU back court, there should be a BULA sign to guide your way to the group. There will also be free dessert! Come if you can (you need to eat anyway, right?) and bring any ideas you have for group activities and events. You can RSVP on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=133159039476 Also: The *second* general group meeting will be on Thursday October 8 at 6pm, at a location still to be arranged. A reminder will be sent out over this list with the location about a week ahead of time. For those of you new to the BULA mailing list: BULA events will be announced over this list, and occasionally some other items of interest to the undergraduate Linguistics community. It is not a high- volume list, however, you can expect to receive not more than maybe 5-10 emails a month. If at any point you wish to change your status on the list, you can do this online at the address given at the bottom of this email.
